Tree Hugger is an interactive installation for the Amsterdam Light Festival 2016/2017 edition. Four trees were outfitted with LED strips and sensors, responding to hugs by lighting up with different colors. During the festival 'our' trees received tens of thousands of hugs, delighting and surprising visitors of all ages.
This project was a collaboration between me and Asia Jackowska.
Every tree had a Raspberry Pi controlling the sensors and lights for that tree. They communicated with each other over a network, synchronizing playback of animations. All the software was written in c for optimal performance, since each Raspberry Pi had to control 1800 full color LEDs.
