For the launch of the next generation Nike Free outsole, we developed an interactive installation to capture the Auxetic Sole Technology : a structure that spontaneously expands and contracts upon impact. We created a range of hands-on digital and physical tools to enable the Nike teams to interact in a tactile way with the technology.

To mimic the behavior of the newly developed outsole we created a spring based physical simulation. This allowed us to pushing different shapes into a digital material, a crossover between a cloth and a folded origami sheet.

Being technical lead on this project I coordinated two other developers to create the software for the experience. As a developer I was in charge of the mesh simulation physics and heavily involved in developing the custom rendering pipeline.

Apart from the tactile experience, which was on display for a limited number of events throughout Europe, the application was also running in retail - both as a full-body experience using the Kinect and a scaled down iPad version for the store crew to use.
